more than three quarters of approximately 11,500 professional musicians in Germany suffer from health complaints regarding their musical activity. Even if the remaining quarter were completely healthy, which is not probable, musicians are a rather ill group of people. Take the hihat nearer to you, play with a narrower guitar, use protection of filters for the ears! Carelessness could cost the joy of life.

The problems
“By strong blowing, blowing up the belly, trumpeters and flutists are affected by ruptures”, the Kurt Singer institute for musician  health quotes a professor from Padua in the 15. century. Thus caution!  At first there are all the physical difficulties. The courses of motion when making music are often directly unnatural, dependig on the instrument. The thick Dreadnought Folk guitar, the Chello, the heavy E-guitar: even if with optimal attitude one plays, the body is not appropriate for it. If there additional mistakes (overexertion while playing for hours without breaks, constant staring at the finger board, contordet torso etc.) the body gives signal: it shows disease symptoms. Neck pain, pain in the shoulders, the fingers, at under- and upper arms, tendosynovitis, herniated disk, headache. Singers are another large problem area with all the possible wrong techniques of singing. If one continues always in such a way, suffering becomes chronicly, it threatens the end of the career .
And then the biggest danger: The damaged hearing. Loud concerts, loud practis, loud instruments (kettle drum). Because of never ending ear noises  people already jumped out of the window. More detail on the end of this side.
Musicians of course also have  another psyche, perhaps the most sensitive of the world.  And this is more than elsewhere exposed to states of emergency. Stage fright and fears of failure lead to sweats, trembling hands, visual disturbances, blackouts, breakdown of the voice.

Movement, movement and movement. Health and fitness. Music and movement belong together actually anyway. The suppleness, with which African or inhabitants of the South Seas  play their instruments, you should make yourself too own. To make music a dance must be. Much movement is called muscles, taut chords and natural body attitude. Special Tipps for musicians:

Playing technice: decrease expenditure of energy, include larger groups of muscles , where possible. No rigid attitude, no cramped continuous tension.
Warm up: Sportsmen know:  Starting cold is the safe way to injury. Your fine motor skills, which has finally to supply the ultimative tone, wants to be brought in, before training and appearance.
Stretching and easing briefly every few minutes, longer e.g. all hour, the circulation must circulate, remove poisons. No Marathon rehearsals, over-training brings suffer. As a professional several short rehearsals on the day. „No pain, No gain “: a fatal slogan.
Do not let you force by the group if you need a break.
Fit your instrument to you and use it ergonomically in the right way. If the thick string set hurts your hand, take thinner and raise the bass at the equalizerl.

 

Music without hearing is unfavorable!
Protect the hair cells of the inner ear.

They have it all, the tinnitus, the noises in the ear, that you can not turn off. Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend (The Who), Sting, Eric Clapton, Lars Ulrich (Drummer for Metallica), Lemmy Kilminster (singer Motorhead), Bono, The Edge, Phil Collins, Mick Fleetwood, Al Di Meola, Steve Lukather (guitarist of Toto), Neil Young, Barbara Streisand.

Notice: Damaged hair cells in the interior ear of humans never recover to old quality again. Birds can do that, not humans.
Notice: Ears cannot get accustomed at noise, even if perhaps your brain fades out the perception.
Notice: You can feel good and spoil thereby the hearing. That is dangerous during concert and with i-pod-headphones. The i-pod-generation will suffer! 115 decibels, daily 30 seconds, lead across the time to permanent damages. 5,2 million US-American children between 6 and 19 years already have hearing damage. Volume delimitations are built into players, but you can only control yourself.

For musicians and concert visitors there are filter systems as ear plugs available, which to some extent let through the original frequency spectrum..
